Sleep of Reason: The Swarm of Bookbats
Conceived here as attendants to the Bookman, bats occupy a traditional position in Carnival. Inspired directly by the well-known Goya print from Caprichios, these bats present the delirium of the sleeping scholar. Order, sense, and rationality flee the onslaught of living, breathing books. Ultimately, the intellect is impotent to fully grasp the Carnival. For now, the sensual alone must suffice, until the books can be captured, gathered up, and re-shelved until the following year.
